OpenSource Server & Client Softwares for Email Communications

Email Server & Clients

I have started to write my experience with the Open Source Softwares, in my last blog i was written about the firewall, gateway and business server. In this blog i am going to share some of the great softwares that are really usefully to setup the powerful email communication.
I have already worked with the Microsoft Exchange Server before a long time, also with the Linux based server Postfix and Zimbra collaboration suits too, It is true that to setup the Exchange on the windows server its easy, but to setup the Linux based Mail server is very easy for the Linux experts and yes Open Source too. The selection of the mail server is depends on the number of users and traffic, no of domain going to be host on the same server, easy access to your emails, are some of the important point you have to keep in mind. Here i am going to list out some of the Open Source email servers like Postfix, IMAP service to the post fix is provided by the Dovecot, Zimbra Collaboration suit, If you host the Linux based server and want to allow the better and easy web client then Roundcube will be the best choice in my opinion.

Postfix Mail Server

Postfix Mail Server
Postfix runs on AIX, BSD, HP-UX, IRIX, LINUX, MacOS X, Solaris, Tru64 UNIX, and other UNIX systems. It requires ANSI C, a POSIX.1 library, and BSD sockets. See below for the gory details of what Postfix expects from the file system. Gory details: the Postfix mail queue requires that (1) the file system can rename a file to a near-by directory without changing the file’s inode number, and that (2) mail is safely stored after fsync() of that file (not its parent directory) returns successfully, even when that file is renamed to a near-by directory at some later point in time. Maildir delivery also requires that (3) a file can be hard linked between different near-by directories. Mailbox delivery introduces no additional requirements beyond what is already needed for Postfix queues. Official Site

Dovecot IMAP Server

Dovecot IMAP Server
Dovecot is an open source IMAP and POP3 email server for Linux/UNIX-like systems, written with security primarily in mind. Dovecot is an excellent choice for both small and large installations. It’s fast, simple to set up, requires no special administration and it uses very little memory.

Roundcube Webmail

Roundcube Webmail
Roundcube Webmail is a browser-based multilingual IMAP client with an application-like user interface. It provides full functionality you expect from an e-mail client, including MIME support, address book, folder manipulation, message searching and spell checking. This project is a free and open source webmail solution with a desktop-like user interface which is easy to install/configure and that runs on a standard LAMPP server. The skins use the latest web standards such as XHTML and CSS 2. Roundcube includes other sophisitcated open-source libraries such as PEAR, an IMAP library derrived from IlohaMail the TinyMCE rich text editor, Googiespell library for spell checking or the WasHTML sanitizer by Frederic Motte.

Zimbra Collaboration Server

Zimbra Server
Zimbra is a next-generation collaboration server that provides organizations greater overall flexibility and simplicity with integrated email, contacts, calendaring, sharing and document management plus mobility and desktop synchronization to users on any computer.
Zimbra Collaboration Suite’s advanced web application and server is built on open standards and technologies to deliver unparalleled per-user scalability and lower overall total cost-of–ownership (TCO). It also offers more options than any other platform to meet the array of application deployment strategies, including on-premises or hosted email, all of which can be cloud and virtualization infrastructure.

It is free in perpetuity (providing you comply with the associated licensing terms). It does not, however, include Zimbra Support or software subscription. – Official site
As per my experience working with the different mail servers, I prefer to work with the Zimbra as it is now only a Email server but its complete Collaboration Suit, that manages the Emails, Contacts, Calendar and Meeting, Document, etc.. Zimbra is built based on the Postfix, MySQL and Java for the Web based application.
Now i am going to list out some of the Popular and widely used OpenSource Email clients.
Thunderbird Email client
Thunderbird Mail Client is easier to upgrade to Thunderbird 3.1 from older versions of Thunderbird and other email clients like Outlook and Outlook Express.
Thunderbird Mail Client’s new Migration Assistant will help you set up Thunderbird the way you want it. And our import tools help you bring your emails, address books, and settings from your older email program to Thunderbird 3.1.
Mail Account Setup Wizard
Prior to this new feature you had to know your IMAP, SMTP, SSL/TLS settings. Now all you need to provide is your name, email address, and password and the new email account set up wizard will check our database and find the email settings for you.
One-click Address Book
One-click Address Book is a quick and easy way to add people to your address book. Add people by simply clicking on the star icon in the message you receive. Two clicks and you can add more details like a photo, birthday, and other contact information.
Search
The new search interface in Thunderbird 3.1 contains filtering and timeline tools to pinpoint the exact email you’re looking for. Thunderbird 3.1 also indexes all of your emails to help you search even faster. Your search results are displayed in a tab so you can easily switch back and forth to your search results and other email.

Zimbra Desktop Client

Zimbra Desktop Client
Zimbra Desktop combines the best aspects of existing email clients (also known as POP or IMAP email clients) with modern webmail applications to make a totally new and improved experience. Nowhere else will you find an application with full email, contact, calendar, document management and offline access features for free!

Unlimited email storage is great but searching through thousands of emails is a hassle. Our Conversation Views and Message Tags automatically highlight important emails in all your email accounts so you can find anything in a hurry. Advanced Search makes finding important pictures, documents or messages from people you care about a snap.
All Your Email Accounts in One Place
Zimbra Mail. Yahoo! Mail. Gmail. AOL. They all work automatically in Zimbra Desktop; even Outlook or any other work or personal email account using POP or IMAP is easy to set up. The best part—you can read them offline without an internet connection when you are in “airplane” mode.
Zimbra Desktop is free
Zimbra software is open source, meaning we make both the software code and the application itself available to anyone at no charge. Also, Zimbra Desktop is a full version; there are no missing features or catches. Enjoy!

There are still lots of things to discuss for the OpenSource applications. In the next post I will discuss about the VOIP servers, softphone, and Chat Server and Clients.
